"Stage 42, formerly known as the Little Shubert, has long been cursed with a history of shows that have been short-lived commercial failures. But that curse just may have been lifted (and here I pause to spit three times to ward off the Evil Eye) with the transfer of the richly honest, heart-felt, and insightful Yiddish language production of Fiddler on the Roof."

This is what I'm praying for, Howard :-)

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. The words that come to mind to describe this production are thrilling, breathtaking, captivating, moving and simply brilliant from beginning to end. If Steve Skybell was eligible to win the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical I imagine he’d win in a walk. He embodies Tevye, and though I saw both Mostel and Bernardi, he might just be the best Tevye ever. He was wonderful downtown and he seems to have become even more comfortable in the role now.

And I have to say one word about Joel Gray’s direction. Flawless. Simply flawless.

I can’t recommend this show enough, for those of every ethnicity. Do not miss it.

I agree, deeply. This is a wondrous production and Skybell was a revelation. I'm not sure I am ready to proclaim who might be the 'best' Tevye, but Skybell is the most realistic, most grounded one I have ever seen, which makes his musings about the shakiness of the Fiddler on the rooftop even more poignant...and pointed. Loved everything about this and hope that people of all ethnicities try to see it. I have seen FIDDLER staged a number of different ways-- on Broadway, on tour, in regionals, at high schools and colleges. But I didn't really 'get' it til this production. First time that I found it thrilling.

I was in tears before "Tradition" was over... lovely production! Should have a long run!
