| A triumph of tedium and self importance. Somewhere in this dramaturgical muddle there are persons who have suffered racial and sexualized trauma and who strive to move beyond these experiences. But the author's voice is so loudly callow that their stories are just notional, an excuse for academic preening. This meandering, shapeless play is almost entirely lifeless; nothing about it convinces. Even as it strains to be provocative at every turn, it's exhaustingly banal. Truly an endurance test. | |

| According to the "other" theater board, Alan Cumming was ill. Apparently he was coughing during the matinee -- in and out of a pool unclothed can't help. Curiously I had tickets for yesterday's matinee -- which no one on "Shoppin'" was interested in buying. We decided, from comments on line, that this was not the show for us. At 1:00 pm I got to the theater and expected a line of standbys. Nobody. The theater had plenty of orchestra seats for $32.50. I could have sold a single for $30, but hoped to sell the pair (that's why I'm a teacher and not a business man). One guy didn't have enough cash (I forgot that nobody carries cash anymore). At 1:30 I donated my tickets back to the New Group. Maybe I avoided the flu? | |

| After "Slave Play," this was a major disappointment. If you want to see it anyway, avoid seats in rows A and B. If you are in A, you will be splashed. (Towels have been provided.) There is no rake between A and B so the sight lines from B are poor. |

| Although I sure hope I end up disagreeing with you, as I'm seeing it next month. Fingers crossed. | |

| Your Post was as self important as the play tried to be. That’s a compliment. That play baffles the mind on so many levels. What a waste of my time. | |

| Even as it strains to be provocative at every turn, it's exhaustingly banal. Something definitely is. |
