What a legacy he leaves, having co-directed ''On the Town'' and ''Singin' in the Rain'' with Gene Kelly. Plus, he directed ''Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'' and ''Funny Face,'' as well as non-musicals, like ''Charade'' and ''Two for the Road.'' And on this Oscar weekend, it might be noted that Donen was never nominated for any of those films (not even for ''Singin' in the Rain,'' which I consider the best Hollywood musical ever). Happily, Donen WAS given an Academy Award for lifetime achievement, and gave one of the most charming acceptance speeches ever. (See below.)

Donen made his Broadway debut as a dancer in ''Pal Joey'' in 1940, followed by ''Best Foot Forward.''

But does anyone remember him directing a short-lived stage adaptation of ''The Red Shoes'' (1993), which ran for about 50 performances?

It starred Steve Barton (who took over from Roger Rees in previews), plus Leslie Browne and Hugh Panaro. With songs by Jule Styne.

I also wonder if Donen ever saw Twyla Tharp's 1985 Broadway adaptation of ''Singin' in the Rain'' and what he thought of it.

Don't get me wrong, love Donna, but was she doing any theatrically released films in the 90s? Just seems odd that she'd be at the Oscars, but, regardless, she looks radiant. And, as for Donen, when he started tap dancing I couldn't stop grinning. Thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful tribute. I had forgotten this. It was given to him in 1998. I hope they acknowledge him tomorrow night.

Presumably the final cut for the In Memoriam section is in.

They need to just give 60 seconds at the end of it. How else to acknowledge the indelible images he left us with?

Thinking of Elaine May today......
