| What a legacy he leaves, having co-directed ''On the Town'' and ''Singin' in the Rain'' with Gene Kelly. Plus, he directed ''Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'' and ''Funny Face,'' as well as non-musicals, like ''Charade'' and ''Two for the Road.'' And on this Oscar weekend, it might be noted that Donen was never nominated for any of those films (not even for ''Singin' in the Rain,'' which I consider the best Hollywood musical ever). Happily, Donen WAS given an Academy Award for lifetime achievement, and gave one of the most charming acceptance speeches ever. (See below.) |
