John Cameron Mitchell: The Origin of Love Tour (Chicago)

I saw this last night and the wonderfully historic Athenaeum Theatre.

The show is full of excitement and exuberance. John Cameron Mitchell wearing a new iteration of his Hedwig look, sings songs from the show and tells the story behind the creation of Hedwig. Often very funny and sometimes touching.

The show has a clear narrative but feels delightfully off the cuff at times. There is something about his self-deprecating style combined with his total command of the audience that reminded me of Bette Midler's concert patter. It's not an easy style to pull off in an authentic way, but he has mastered it.

In addition to the Hedwig material, he performs new material form his musical Anthem and few other surprises.

He gets strong support from Amber Martin who is dazzling whether doing a backup vocal or one her solos.

The show is beautifully lighted and the bad sounds great!
