| Page, thank you for this post. Apropos of nothing, I suppose, you brought back great memories of seeing those two women – and the entire, incredible original cast. I remember that at the time I'd heard strong buzz coming out of Chicago. So I rushed the show with a friend during previews. The seats we were given (for cheap!) must have been unused house seats – orchestra center, eight rows back, on the house left aisle. We had *no idea* what we were about to behold. I vividly recall how real, chaotic, and organic the central dinner scene in Act 2 felt. Dunagan's speech to those assembled was shocking, invigorating, and honestly terrifying. I literally gasped at some of her viciousness. Morton's delivery of her timeless line to end the scene and act was unforgettable. I remembering it echoing throughout the house for a moment in the blackout, followed immediately by a roar of delight, applause, and pure electricity among the audience as the house lights rose. What a gift to have seen those two at the top of their craft in a piece so suited to them. And again, a shout-out to the whole original cast, with so many indelible performances. Rondi Reed, Brian Kerwin, and Sally Murphy were each perfection in their roles, too, in my humble opinion. Thanks for the memory! |

| I really loved this production. Even though Dunagan had the flashier role, the play is really about Morton's character. She is the one who evolves and changes over the course of the story. I think Morton's character is much harder to play, and she did a really outstanding job. My personal vote would have gone to Morton, although Dunagan gave an excellent performance. (spoilers) I really liked Phylicia Rashad's take on the mother. Dunagan was steamrolling over her family. Rashad's take was a much slyer one -- her Violet seemed very bewildered but every now and then, the mask would slip a bit. And then at the end, it completely came off. I don't think Rashad's Violet was completely calculating, but she definitely played up her ailments to her benefit. In addition to the cast members mentioned above, I think Mariann Mayberry was really outstanding. The deliver of her parting words about going to Belize with her boyfriend was perfect. "Come January, I'll be in Belize. Doesn't that sound nice?" |

| I saw this show when it premiered in Chicago and was blown away by the incredible writing, acting and direction. So great to see so many Steppenwolf ensemble members together on stage. I'm glad that Mariann Mayberry's performance was mentioned. For those not familiar with her work, she was an incredible actress, and August Osage was only one of her many wonderful performances. Sadly, she passed away in 2017. See the link below for more info about Mariann. | |

| I have such fond memories of her beautiful performance in Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses too. I wish New York could have seen more from her, she was a very talented actor. | |
