Alan - that's interesting to me. I had seen several productions of SHE LOVES ME prior to the recent Roundabout production. The book always seemed problematic to me. Just before I saw the recent revival, THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER was on TCM, and I revisited it - charmed again by the 'Lubitsch touch.

When I saw the musical again, IMHO every alteration of plot and character made in the musical from that in the film, worked to the disadvantage of the musical. The most obvious - to me - is the scene when the 'dear friends' meet at the cafe. In the film, its an actual central european cafe - coffee house. It's charming and lovely and just right.

The musical turns it into a red plush sleazy restaurant for liaisons. Someplace that, again, IMHO, Amalia/Klara would never have gone to meet any man. And that George/Krailik never would have had the cojones (or forints) to reserve a table at. 'Romantic Atmosphere' has always been the cringeworthy song in the show - but I guess they had to find something for Carol Haney to choreograph - it was a musical after all.

Maybe someone has done this, but one could certainly do a review of change made between screenplay and musical, and I don't believe many will be to the advantage of the musical - which despite all has one of the great scores in musical theatre history.

I guess this is just the vulgarization process that Broadway seems fond of (though some adaptations, like THE BANDS VISIT, seem to resist the impulse) when they turn a movie into a musical. Its hard to recognize the charm and grace of the films of The Full Monty and Kinky Boots when one looks upon the musicals made of them.

On the other hand, as Tevye might say, the American audiences liked them loud and vulgar. So write it up to my being cranky.
