The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, as part of its acclaimed Developmental Reading Series, will present a staged reading of the new musical Monet, with music and lyrics by Carmel Owen (Asylum: The Strange Case of Mary Lincoln), and book by Joan Ross Sorkin (In the Theatre). Monet will play two performances only on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter’s (619 Lexington Avenue, entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue).

The readings are FREE and open to the public on the day of the presentation. Advance reservations are available with a minimum suggested donation of $10.00 fee for each reading (Advance reservations are complimentary for York Theatre's Plus Members; $5 for York Theatre Members).

Directed by Alan Paul (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum), with music direction by Eugene Gwozdz (Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story), the ten-member cast will feature Ken Clark (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812), Peter Cormican (Follies), George Dvorsky (York’s Closer Than Ever), Jeanne Lehman (Beauty and the Beast), Jamie LaVerdiere (The Producers), Maurice Murphy (Motown the Musical), Tom Rhoads (Buttons), Danielle Erin Rhodes (The Marvelous Wonderettes), Alexandra Silber (Fiddler on the Roof), and Price Waldman (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder).

Monet is inspired by the remarkable life of Claude Monet and the price he ultimately paid for his art. Think mystery, romance and revolution, and one painting that changed everything. The show has been in development, most recently at an evening of song and story at the French Consulate. Projection design and lighting will be added at The York to integrate the color and light of Impressionism into the drama.

The creative team includes Associate Music Director Joe Mohan, Projection Designer Lacey Erb, Lighting Designer Lucrecia Briceno, Production Stage Manager Carol Sullivan, and Assistant Stage Manager Ryan Ross.

The York’s Developmental Reading Series presents over 30 readings and workshops of new musicals by emerging and established authors throughout the year, a vital part of the writing process. The strong commitment to developing new work is an important part of what makes the York unique in the musical theatre community. The series can also serve as an incubator for shows to be considered for Mainstage productions, thus serving the York's unique mission of taking new musicals through the complete development process to full production. Projects developed through the series have included Broadway’s Avenue Q and In Transit and the York’s Cagney, Mark Felt, Superstar, Desperate Measures, and Unexpected Joy.

The York Theatre Company is the only theatre in New York City—and one of very few in the world—dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving neglected, notable shows from the past. For over four decades, York’s intimate, imaginative style of producing both original and classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike. Under the guidance of Producing Artistic Director James Morgan since 1997, The York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage Series—most of them world, American, or New York premieres—by some of the field’s most esteemed creators, and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Almost 40 cast recordings from The York Theatre Company productions are now available on CD, including its acclaimed revival of Closer Than Ever (2013 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Revival); commercial transfers of such York premieres as The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), Souvenir (Tony Award Nomination for actress Judy Kaye), and Jolson & Company, and revivals of Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd (four Tony Nominations including Best Revival) have all showcased the importance of The York and its programs. Recent New York premieres have included Marry Harry, A Taste of Things to Come, and Rothschild & Sons. The critically acclaimed musical Yank!, which received its Off-Broadway debut at The York in 2010, recently opened to rave reviews in London as did York’s Rothschild & Sons. Recent hits include Cagney, which moved to the Westside Theatre and ran for 15 months, and Desperate Measures, which received a Drama Desk Award for “Best Music and Lyrics” as well as the Outer Critics Circle and Off-Broadway Alliance Awards for “Best Musical” and transferred to New World Stages where it ran for 7 months. More recently York’s Unexpected Joy, played London’s Southwark Playhouse and Midnight at The Never Get and Christmas in Hell finished out the year.
