Regarding the café scene in SHE LOVE ME, I wonder if something about the approach to that scene in the most recent Roundabout production was just wrong-headed. I'd seen several productions of the show prior to that one, including the Roundabout's original revival in the '90's, and that song had never stuck out so much to me as it did at Studio 54.
I'd never realized before that "A Romantic Atmosphere" could be completely removed from the show and it wouldn't make a bit of difference. The staging at Studio 54 brought the show to a complete halt and I kept wishing they'd stop and let us go back to Georg and Amalia. It literally has no reason to exist...it's not even covering a scene or costume change. Perhaps you are correct that it was left in the show as a gift to Carol Haney.
I'd always thought of the song as a little comic breather, but it just did not work in any way at Studio 54. |
