| She will be spot-on, no matter what. The issue here is the direction, the approach, the period-specific design (it dare not overwhelm), the access. The story is brilliant but scene-by-scene rather small, intimate, among only a handful of people. The songs are big, theatrical, and will grind it to a halt unless handled with great trust for the material and Close. But who knows? Maybe Ashford has pitched a take that Close likes. She knows the material better than anyone. | |

| I’m skeptical about Rob Ashford. I did like Carousel in Chicago and he did good work with Kenneth Branagh on Macbeth but others musicals he has worked haven’t been as successful. And what proof is there he knows how to direct a film, especially a big musical? | |

| Although I agree that his lack of film experience makes him a surprising hire, Ashford cannot possibly be as bad as Joel Schumacher was for Phantom. | |

| "Although I agree that his lack of film experience makes him a surprising hire, Ashford cannot possibly be as bad as Joel Schumacher was for Phantom." For what it's worth, I don't think Schumacher's actual direction of the film was a problem. In fact, I thought he did quite a good job with that. The problem was some of the casting..... |

| Also, lack of experience doesn't mean anything. Sam Mendes had done only theatre when he was hired to make AMERICAN BEAUTY and that ended up winning him and the film both Oscars. | |

| But he was GREAT at directing theater, plays and musicals, and had proven that over and over for years. The same absolutely cannot be said for Ashford. | |

| It's not even so much that I worry he doesn't have a good take or pitch on it... though I assume it's going to be pretty straight forward no matter who directs... it's a question of if this director can pull it off, within the presumably limited budget they'll have, and have the touch and ability with an editor, after having the touch on set directing the actors and cameras, to make the difficult tone and big vs smallness of this material work on screen. I have no idea if Ashford can do that - maybe he can maybe he can't - but the issue is he's never had to prove it, and it's not like he even has a stage career that would make me say "take a chance on him, he's brilliant" like I would have with, say, Sam Mendes doing American Beauty. I'm all for stage people getting a chance to do film... but I just can't take another bad film of a stage musical to tell audience and producers "musicals are bad... don't spend money on them, this is what you get." And I also just do not get, on paper or otherwise, the matching of this stage director/choreographer with this particular material. This musical rides such a line of being a mistake to make as a film, being a risk, and also of almost but never happening... i am just surprised they were willing to greenlight it without a proven film director at the helm. |
