Any ideas for Joe Gillis? I'm very curious to see which direction they go -

Hugh Jackman? Patrick Wilson? Justin Timberlake?

Two other gents for Joe who could really sing, though not presently big at the box-office, are Jeremy Northam (wonderful as Ivor Novello in "Gosford Park" and James Marsden (very impressive singing in the film of "Hairspray").

Hugh Jackman

Is it better if they're both too old?

Casting for this film seems challenging. Zachary Levi (only if it's now a comedy?)? How about Chris Pine?

Way back in 2004, I was covering the Drama Desk Awards.

It was the year Mr. Jackman won for THE BOY FROM OZ,
as he was leaving the press room, I asked him if will be doing the film version of SB
His reply: "if the right people are involved"

Hugh Jackman is set to film new movie in October

Hugh may no longer be available, if he is considered for "Joe Gillis". While I would not be surprised if he is offered the role ( he has played it in the stage musical in Australia with Trevor Nunn who eventually cast him again in Oklahoma!...and since the new head of Paramount is Jim Gianopulos who was former Fox head who helped recommend the greenlight for Greatest Showman...and who has worked with Hugh on the Hollywood MPTF annual concert series of which he was chairman), Hugh may no longer be available. He is set to start filming in late October a new major project called REMINISCENCE with Rebecca Ferguson, which has just been picked up by Warner Bros for distribution. Unless Sunset Blvd is delayed in its filming schedule, Hugh may not be in a position to consider any offer for the Joe role.

I do think they need to cast an actor who can at least look credible in the romantic liaison with Norma Desmond. Since Glenn Close is now 70 years old, maybe they need someone who also physically fits the role just like the virile-looking William Holden in the original film noir version by Billy Wilder. Otherwise, the strong persona that Glenn seems to suggest will overwhelm her pseudo-romantic partner in Sunset Blvd.

Could Gerard Butler be a possibility?

What about Gerard Butler? He was the lead in the film adaptation of a sung-thru musical, ALWebber's greatest hit, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA?

I suggested Timberlake above, as well. Jackman and Wilson are both too old (although I know with a 73-year old Norma, Joe could be 50 and still significantly younger).

He's kind of perfect for it but if I were him (or his agent) it's not the vehicle I would encourage him to choose.

I would think Jackman. The romance seems more plausible than it would be with Efron. Plus, Joe Gillis is supposed to be a bit of a has been (or never was) so should not be too young.

Gyllenhaal, if he'll do it.

Incredible choice!

But still maybe he doesn't have the actual box office power they would want for the non-Glenn roles. He's big, but I don't think he always translates to even theoretically big numbers at the cinema B.O.

Zac Efron is the obvious choice

He has the audience, the experience, the voice and the look... I don't think he's old enough, but I have ZERO doubt that they are going for him first, unless they can get Justin Timberlake or someone with a huge pop career.

I normally stay out of speculative threads like this but this was even more laughable than the Tony/Oscar prediction above. lol

Justin Timberlake is physically wrong and too lightweight.

Also he can't play period. I hate to make absolute statements but some performers just don't have the gift to evoke another era. And he is a singer more than an actor. Did anyone see him in the Woody Allen movie Wonder Wheel? I think that was set in the fifties. It was hilarious and jarring how modern he played.

Don't mean to hate on him. I like him just fine.
