NEW - SUPERHERO - Talkin' Broadway's Review
Posted by: T.B._Admin. 10:01 pm EST 02/28/19

James Wilson takes a look at Superhero:

Superheroes are potentially living amongst us, and they may be individuals one would least expect. That colleague who is constantly late or blowing off meetings? He could be a superhero. The elusive neighbor who comes and goes at the oddest times? She could be one too. This is one of the conceits of Superhero, the new mixed-bag of a musical with book by John Logan and music and lyrics by Tom Kitt currently playing at Second Stage Off-Broadway. . . .

Problematic, but worth seeing. Maybe my expectations were lowered, and that helped. There is a lot of talent on and behind the stage on this one. I wonder if regionals and schools will pick up on it. I would like to hear a cast recording.

Wondering if Kitt is still working on the Dave musical.

The reviews were in almost complete agreement.

Though divided in terms of prioritizing problems: some felt the concept was hoary, cliche-ridden and predictable; others felt the power-ballad fueled treatment was at fault; still others felt both. But I didn't read anyone who round a reason to cheer a coming together of elements. Some like Pinkham and other preferred the yeoman's work of Baldwin.

I had high hopes for Kitt. Many of us have wonderful responses to "Next to Normal." I thought "If/Then" had a powerful, evocative score, with several songs simply beautiful. (I always respond to "Always Starting Over." But outside of the context, "Learn to Live Without" is an exquisite elegy about grief, and remains one of my favorite songs of this era.)

Well, I rank Next to Normal near the top of the list of contemporary musicals, if not at the top. And I found little to like in If/Then. After thinking quite a bit about it after seeing it, Superhero seems to come from a sensible place, but they didn't find / haven't found a way to make it work.

It strikes me as a show with a potential cult-like following, even if retroactively speaking of the NYC production. It will have fans and detractors, but something inspired this gifted team to collaborate and spend years on it. It also managed to reach the O'Neill, which intrigues me, where none of the problems were solved.

I love Kitt, but have zero interest in this material, as at least one review stated about a subjective response to the subject matter.

How can Jesse Greene refer to Kate Baldwin as a should have been musical star. She is the very essence of a musical star and will undoubtedly star in many future shows.

How about Jesse Greene as a should have been New York Times first string theatre critic.

I'm a big fan of Ms Baldwin, and enjoyed here in SUPERHERO. But rather than reacting to what one considers a dissing of one's favorite, you gotta read what Jesse Actually wrote, in context. Ms Baldwin is terrific - but she is not a Broadway star - it would be nice of she became one!
She's appeared in 6 Broadway shows over 19 years. She was a replacement swing in THE FULL MONTY , she was in the ensemble and an understudy in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (at one point taking over some supporting roles during the run), she replaced Nancy Anderson as Helen during the run of WONDERFUL TOWN, she was Sharon, the lead, in the ill advised transfer of the Encores FINIANS RAINBOW in 2009, was featured in the flop BIG FISH in 2013, and played the supporting role of Irene Molloy in HELLO, DOLLY! I enjoyed her in all of these. But to be a Broadway star you have to play the lead role in a couple of hits, at the very least.

The use of past tense implies her career is over.

You know, because she's over 40 and working at Second Stage.

She is a wonderful actress with a beautiful voice. She was amazing in the revival of John and Jen a few years back. This past holiday season I was waiting on the 34th st platform for an express train-she was only a few feet away so I did something I never did before, walked over to her and told her how much I admire her work. She could not have been more gracious! Told her I had seen her with all 3 Dollys many times over, and all her other great performances. We discussed this new show which I'm seeing this month-know she'll be brilliant as always!

Her definitive Irene Molloy was actually a career high, one might argue.

Baldwin and Creel were such a critical component of the "Dolly" success, it's unfair to have her participation reductively characterized as Green did. Yes, it's a star vehicle for a woman named Dolly. But the production proved it's really a show about the lives that intersect in one vivid day. When Peters took over, the Irene-Dolly relationship had a special vibe that made them feel like true peers, as businesswomen and otherwise. I thought Irene became even more valuable to the "Dolly" storytelling, and needless to say, Baldwin was the strongest I've seen. And I've seen stellar Irene Molloys.

Yep. I thought of her for Malloy the moment they announced the production. Obviously they did too. Her voice is made for “Ribbons Down My Back.”

I wish Jesse Green would stop writing about musicals. He obviously doesn’t like the genre very much.

And he insulted Kate Baldwin in his review which is unforgivable.

He said she's terrific in this, but not a Broadway star. Seems pretty accurate to me.
