I wouldn't think Glenn Close is someone who can effortlessly be counted on to guarantee a big budget movie.

Do they put someone big in as Joe? Someone like Justin Timberlake? Or go diverse and cast Michael B. Jordan or Stephan James. (Can either of them sing, though...?)

And for Max. Does he have to be German? Does it matter if the von Stroheim tradition is maintained and Max is German? For some reason, Javier Bardem is coming to mind, even though Christoph Waltz is more traditional.

I think the property and the leading lady both feel like old news, and if the director IS Rob Ashford, then so. is the director. It needs someone to make it pop.

Jake Gyllenhaal for Joe. JK Simmons for Max.

Can Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans or Chris Pine sing?

Chris Pine was Cinderella's Prince in INTO THE WOODS. His "Agony" was passable enough.

Jake G. is my favorite suggestion so far. I'd love to see J. K. Simmons as Max too. He really should have been Thenardier in the Les Mis film with Emma Thompson as his Mrs. (Oops, where did that old grievance come from?)
