Ahmanson Theatre 2019-20 season
Posted by: showtunetrivia 05:17 pm EST 03/01/19

LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS, Mike Birbiglia's THE NEW ONES, Sting in THE LAST SHIP, THE BOOK OF MORMON, Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND.

I am excited about THE LAST SHIP and massively underwhelmed by everything else. This is at least the third--it could be the fourth or fifth--time THE BOOK OF MORMON has come to LA, and SWAN LAKE has visited before,,too. Yawn.

I hope the Taper season is better.

I am assuming this OOTI tour is based on the recent revival and if so, then it is definitely something to get excited about. It will be interesting to see how they transform that show for a traditional proscenium space; I imagine they will add on stage seating and maybe extend the stage over the pit as this show does not have a traditional orchestra. Still, I am glad this production is touring and I will get to see it again, after seeing it three times on Broadway.

I know the staging is supposed to be great. But I've seen it twice and it's not a show or a score I love.

That's part of the Pantages-Dolby season. Also MEAN GIRLS, SPONGEBOB, MARGUARITAVILLE, etc. SUMMER and ANASTASIA, And also FROZEN will be at the Pantages and then HAMILTON returns for a long stay. (Which is why the other shows are at the Dolby.)

Laura, also unexcited by all of these save TBV

The Pantages is a huge barn (2,700 seats) , but the Dolby is even bigger (3,400). TBV will be swallowed up alive.

Dolby is a huge barn that is finally getting some use. Years ago I saw the musical The Ten Commandments there. Val Kilmer was the star.

Oscars have been here since it opened in 2001 or 02 (previously known as the Kodak Theatre).

I've seen a few things here--for many years, it had Cirque du Soleil--Mandy Patinkin in concert comes to mind.

The Dolby has some of the Worst Parking in all SoCal. Took ages to exit the structure. Not doing that again; would rather walk many blocks.

Mike Birbiglia in the Ahmanson?! Why?!

I love Birbiglia, but his shows are SMALL (one man shows tend to be), and he is really not THAT famous, certainly not someone I'd think could come close to sell all the tickets in the Ahmanson. This seems a much better fit for the Taper... why did they program it this way?

I don't think LATIN HISTORY will play well in that cavern, either.

And BOOK OF MORMON was here in 2012, 2014, and 2017. Do we really need it again?

Oh, well. I'm broke, anyway, so the $$$ I save not going to the Ahmanson can go to replacing the 1996 Taurus, now on its last wheels.

Laura, still disappointed

The Ahmanson had a big year for 2018-19, bringing in several productions that sold really well. One really needed a subscription to guarantee that they’d see the shows. I imagine that some (or a lot) of the season subscribers will hold on through 2019-20 and then reconsider after a season where the choices weren’t so wonderful.

Bill, in San Diego, which is affected by what’s touring both to LA and Orange County

I can't afford subscriptions any more, so I have to pick and choose. Both the Ahmanson and Pantages routinely put damn near everything on Goldstar now (save HAMILTON). Pantages delayed putting HELLO, DOLLY! on Goldstar until about ten days before it opened--it was close to full, as was COME FROM AWAY at the Ahmanson this fall. Besides HAMILTON, I think the last time I saw a jam-packed Pantages was Nov 2016 for HEDWIG, but some much of their recent seasons have been endless retreads (WICKED, PHANTOM, CATS, LES MIS). I guess there's a market, but I'm not it.

As long as there's a market, they'll keep bringing them in. And iif they can sell a bigger house, thely'll use it.

I understand the frustration. I guess people just want to be in the house. When I saw Hello, Dolly! from a not far back, but very high up (at $95) seat in Cleveland, the sets everyone raves about looked cheap because I could see how thin things like the train were.

That said, when I saw my first Broadway tour ever (A Chorus Line), from the last row, it was revelatory.

And sometimes a show is such a stinker, I find myself being grateful I didn't shell out for the orchestra (JEKYLL AND HYDE, for example).

I wonder how the Ahmanson will do with the upcoming INDECENT and FALSETTOS, which had the Broadway productions broadcast on PBS, and next season's LATIN HISTORY, also on PBS/Netflix. I'm a Finn fan, so you would normally find me at FALSETTOS, but I hated that black cube thing when I saw the broadcast and said, "I'm so not seeing the tour."

Not to beat a dead horse, but this announced season is a dead horse. I will travel to L.A. for Sting in The Last Ship. I doubt I'll even read the reviews of the remainder.

One good thing, if you don't mind the extreme side seats of the orchestra on a Tuesday night -- which is where I used to sit and when I used to go -- you can see these shows for about 30 bucks each and have your seats guaranteed by a subscription.

Didn't you find the Pantages sightlines there horrible? After sitting there for two shows (and missing 10-15% of the stage), I vowed never again. I'd rather be back balcony center.

I'd rather be able to see the actors' faces, while sitting in about the 8th row of the orchestra on the side aisle in the Ahmanson, than be further back and lose everything. I don't mind missing a quarter of the stage, especially in a musical. And most plays are staged center and shallow anyway.

But it's just my personal choice. And I really like the 30 buck tickets. Now I we could just figure out the traffic...
