| "Is that because they don't audition, they can't dance the choreography, or the toned and [muscular] types are the only ones hired [to dance in the choruses of musicals]" I cannot answer that question, so I'll leave it to casting directors and directors to do so. Maybe someone can also ask them if they think a quota system should be instituted that requires the hiring of a certain number of large-bodied, full-figured, or overweight (choose your own acceptable term) dancers for shows. |

| I'm not in casting, but it seems logical to me that training to dance at levels we routinely see in Broadway shows is incredibly physical exercise, so it's not surprising to me that professional dancers tend to be lean and tight and muscular, but not too muscular. If we all had the natural talent and the time to put in the physical work over a couple of decades, we'd all look like Broadway dancers. But we do see diversity in ensembles when casting people purposely seek that. Look at a show like KINKY BOOTS, which features an ensemble of different body types all of whom move to varying degrees. One of the worst examples of casting an ensemble I've ever seen was the most recent revival of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. That production was directed by a choreographer, who filled his ensemble completely with dancers with traditional dancer bodies. But, this is a show that cries out to be populated with character of different ages and body types. So the production featured an ensemble of dancers trying to play characters, rather than characters moving and dancing. |

| Hear! Hear! regarding that chorus in How to Succeed. Contrast with The Brother of Man number in the film which is so ridiculously delightful because of the casting. I've often wondered if they had a particular advantage in the film because they could get the perfect actors without being concerned if they could sing, or was this perhaps actual chorus members from the Broadway production? | |

| ...the ensemble of the current Kiss Me, Kate is quite diverse in body type. And Head Over Heels had some fun with our changing perceptions of what makes a body "hot" earlier this season. FWIW, just looking over the past several years of these lists also show how standards of beauty / hotness change and evolve. |

| The intensity of the pushback to some mild questioning about these lists in today's social context is pretty interesting. Seems way out of proportion. | |

| I wouldn't characterize "this seems out of place for 2019" as "mild questioning," nor would I characterize the response to that statement as "way out of proportion." I wonder if the people who object to the TimeOut list think BROADWAY BARES should be stopped, or that it should be required to featured lots of full-figured people in skimpy clothing? |

| For what it may be worth, Broadway Bares HAS expanded its body type inclusion over the years to include zaftig and Bear-ish types and gender-non-conforming types and a bit of everything in the mix at times. I am not criticizing you, only pointing that out. (I enjoy the list for its prurient merits and also as a window into what the north-east thinks hotness looks like this year.) Also, a little over-reaction on both sides is to be expected. Everyone gets a little defensive when their kink is called out. |
