| Though divided in terms of prioritizing problems: some felt the concept was hoary, cliche-ridden and predictable; others felt the power-ballad fueled treatment was at fault; still others felt both. But I didn't read anyone who round a reason to cheer a coming together of elements. Some like Pinkham and other preferred the yeoman's work of Baldwin. I had high hopes for Kitt. Many of us have wonderful responses to "Next to Normal." I thought "If/Then" had a powerful, evocative score, with several songs simply beautiful. (I always respond to "Always Starting Over." But outside of the context, "Learn to Live Without" is an exquisite elegy about grief, and remains one of my favorite songs of this era.) |

| Well, I rank Next to Normal near the top of the list of contemporary musicals, if not at the top. And I found little to like in If/Then. After thinking quite a bit about it after seeing it, Superhero seems to come from a sensible place, but they didn't find / haven't found a way to make it work. | |

| It strikes me as a show with a potential cult-like following, even if retroactively speaking of the NYC production. It will have fans and detractors, but something inspired this gifted team to collaborate and spend years on it. It also managed to reach the O'Neill, which intrigues me, where none of the problems were solved. I love Kitt, but have zero interest in this material, as at least one review stated about a subjective response to the subject matter. |
