| The Ahmanson had a big year for 2018-19, bringing in several productions that sold really well. One really needed a subscription to guarantee that they’d see the shows. I imagine that some (or a lot) of the season subscribers will hold on through 2019-20 and then reconsider after a season where the choices weren’t so wonderful. | I can't afford subscriptions any more, so I have to pick and choose. Both the Ahmanson and Pantages routinely put damn near everything on Goldstar now (save HAMILTON). Pantages delayed putting HELLO, DOLLY! on Goldstar until about ten days before it opened--it was close to full, as was COME FROM AWAY at the Ahmanson this fall. Besides HAMILTON, I think the last time I saw a jam-packed Pantages was Nov 2016 for HEDWIG, but some much of their recent seasons have been endless retreads (WICKED, PHANTOM, CATS, LES MIS). I guess there's a market, but I'm not it. Laura |

| As long as there's a market, they'll keep bringing them in. And iif they can sell a bigger house, thely'll use it. I understand the frustration. I guess people just want to be in the house. When I saw Hello, Dolly! from a not far back, but very high up (at $95) seat in Cleveland, the sets everyone raves about looked cheap because I could see how thin things like the train were. That said, when I saw my first Broadway tour ever (A Chorus Line), from the last row, it was revelatory. |

| And sometimes a show is such a stinker, I find myself being grateful I didn't shell out for the orchestra (JEKYLL AND HYDE, for example). I wonder how the Ahmanson will do with the upcoming INDECENT and FALSETTOS, which had the Broadway productions broadcast on PBS, and next season's LATIN HISTORY, also on PBS/Netflix. I'm a Finn fan, so you would normally find me at FALSETTOS, but I hated that black cube thing when I saw the broadcast and said, "I'm so not seeing the tour." Laura |
