I saw it last night. Not sure what to say except that it's all over the place. The usual Guare style is there, but with a lack of much human emotion it seems like people mostly running around on stage. I ended up focusing on the lines, some of which are funny and clever.
The only real character is John Larroquette's, but since he mainly watches other people, he's a passive protagonist, and that doesn't work so well with a lack of cohesiveness. Will Swenson's character is a waste. Probably only Douglas Sills has much else to do, but I didn't mind watching such good actors up close for two hours (it was two hours with an intermission).
I'm also not sure how jokes about Roman Polanski and pedophilia are going to land in this environment.
The theater was about one-third empty - probably word of mouth spreading through the members. |
