| Lynn Not is writing the book. I can't image she will gloss over the controversy. If I was going to provide the scenario it would be: Art vs. the artist - The explosion of music, creativity, success and the loneliness of fame. | |

| You think producers and investors ultimately give a f*ck what Ms. Nottage wants to put in this musical? This is WAY WAY bigger than her, or any writer... and I'm sure they will get someone else to write it if she doesn't go with what they want for this show. I'm sure they are "excited" to see her take, but then they will make it whatever they think will sell and get awards, but sell above all else. | |

| ...the Michael Jackson estate has full and total approval over the project. So, there’s that. Regardless of what Nottage wants to write, the estate (with their $100-million-dollar lawsuits) certainly won’t allow any allusions to, let alone outright mention of, the accusations... and as SidL implies, investors won’t commit to a show that isn’t, out of necessity after this week, a whole lot darker than it was probably ever intended to be. |

| What Nottage et al. need to do is write a DREAMGIRLS-esque show about an icon not unlike Michael Jackson who is hugely influential in the music industry and is beloved by millions, but who also has a dark side. Then they can incorporate whatever dark matter they want without having to hew strictly to the truth of Jackson's life and without having to deal with the estate/family. It'll be clear that the show is inspired by Jackson, but, if it's presented as a fictional story, I don't think anyone can sue them or shut them down. Did DREAMGIRLS ever face any litigation from Diana Ross or anyone else associated with the Supremes? |

| ... what’s the hook? Who’s writing the score? And, if it’s all Michael Jackson-style soundalikes (like the Supremes pastiches in Dreamgirls), then after Nottage’s long-gestating involvement in the Jackson show, once again I don’t think there’s any doubt that the Jackson estate would (at least try to) sue, whether they have a case or not. I see what you’re saying, and in a vacuum it’s an excellent idea - frankly I’d love to see that show - but given all the givens, I think my point stands that in almost any incarnation this show is doomed. |
