| The younger Norma appearing behind her immediately summons "Follies," which is ironic since the iconic still shot of Swanson amid the theater rubble in part inspired the show. Almost a "One More Kiss" vibe. It quickly turns into (less interesting) a vintage television special, that look I recall in countless broadcasts when I was a young child. N.B. Her vocals are quite startling, aren't they? She could've sung the ALW score. |

| The problem with the musical is that it took moments already perfect in Wilder's film and expanded what didn't need to be expanded. Too often in the musical, the songs interrupt the story rather than elaborating or enhancing it. As a comparison, in Phantom, the character or situation have moved on by the end of the songs; in SB, the action waits for the song to end, and nor do the songs add much to the character we didn't already know, making the show as heavy as the mansion itself held up by hydraulics. But what do I know? Nothing. I wonder how they will make these musical longeurs dramatically interesting over long minutes in the movie musical version. | |

| Just now I was about to retire for the day, when I noticed MUSIC on TCM, ; I missed the first 20 minute-Came in just in time for 'I've Told every little star"; Kern's music is wonderful' with Hammerstein's lyric a match, but it's on the operetta-ish side. Swanson is wonderful, a broad performance of a diva. Highly enjoyable. | |
