The problem with the musical is that it took moments already perfect in Wilder's film and expanded what didn't need to be expanded. Too often in the musical, the songs interrupt the story rather than elaborating or enhancing it. As a comparison, in Phantom, the character or situation have moved on by the end of the songs; in SB, the action waits for the song to end, and nor do the songs add much to the character we didn't already know, making the show as heavy as the mansion itself held up by hydraulics. But what do I know? Nothing. I wonder how they will make these musical longeurs dramatically interesting over long minutes in the movie musical version.
