| Camelot was wonderful. Simple blocking, very understated costuming (jeans, suits no ties, t-shirts) though Solea Pfeiffer wore a white gown. Lin was terrific. Solea is phenomenal. The control she has over her voice is something else. Jordan Domica as Lancelot was excellent, much better than his Freddy. Solea and Jordan had incredible chemistry. Burstein, Slater, Collela turned in strong supporting performances. Lance's miracle was breathtaking. The timing and acting of the scene was transcendent. Hillary Clinton attended and walked out at the end of the show right in front of me. Oscar Eustis also there, in addition to Lin's wife and parents. |

| Debra Jo Rupp gives a performance that is so full of warmth, vulnerability, empathy for her character, and expert comic timing that it is tempting to overlook the many shortcomings of the play and its MTC production. It is a phenomenal--almost quietly phenomenal--performance that got me wondering how she had been in Frankie and Johnny and how she would be in plays that have gone to bigger named actresses like Good People, Frozen, God of Carnage, and Tiny Beautiful Things. The play itself has a lot of good laughs and tries to be sympathetic to all of its different characters, despite their conflicting views and a fairly clear authorial perspective on what is right and what is wrong. I don't know that the piece has anything new to say or any special insight to offer into fairly familiar material. The production is another story. Dan Daily acquits himself well, getting many laughs and suggesting his character's internal struggles, but doesn't approach Rupp's standard for bringing depth to a role that is, more or less, a "type." Genevieve Angelson and Marinda Anderson are another story. Angelson is self-conscious and effortful--qualities that have marred every performance of hers that I've seen (except, to some degree, in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike). Anderson is a mess: all technique, no heart, and not for one second believable. She is not in the same league--maybe not even in the same game--as the actress whom I saw play the role at the Geffen this fall. Watching Angelson and Anderson, I felt like I was watching first year grad students in an MFA production demonstrating all they've learned. The production is beautifully designed (I would love to live on a John Lee Beatty set) and credibly, though not creatively, staged. |

| ... about any possible new insight. Your second paragraph is most important to me. It sounds like a play that should have been produced several years ago. | |

| I think the cake could be related to wind where religion rights compete with individual rights. I don’t think the topic of the cake is decided by the court or pubic. So exposing people who may not have considered both sides makes this play still relevant. | |

| That's quite a comparison! How does it "expose people who may not have considered both sides" - do you mean the characters, or potential theatregoers? Are minds going to be changed? When I read all the comments, it doesn't really sound like both sides are being authentically considered (not that I want them to too much - I'm already on a side). I can hear the other side at Thanksgiving dinner ;) |

| The comparison is religion vs science (wind) or individual dignity (cake). Most likely right wingers aren’t going to see the cake. I found it interesting that it was produced in a summer festival on university campus in West Virginia. I’m not a huge play lover, but I did find this more interesting than most. But it is a topic that I can relate too. |

| Maybe each of us does, 50% of the time. We start at different places - dramatic plays are my favorite and musicals seem to be yours. |

| I agree with your second paragraph. I don’t remember much about the play, but I did enjoy it and it really didn’t cover much new territory although timely for me since the month before the Supreme Court had ruled in favor of the Colorado bakery for odd reasons. So it’s an issue and was on will and grace a few months ago with baker refusing to make a MAGA cake for Karen. | |

| I agree with you wholeheartedly! With one caveat I suppose. I couldn't tell if the young lesbians were badly drawn, or if the acting was just poor--especially Anderson, who I thought was terrible. It would be a more interesting play (but still, not a terrifically interesting one) if the younger couple were believable--if I genuinely thought they were deeply in love and wanted to spend their lives together. It is so worth the play just to watch Debra Jo Rupp, though--what a performance! And I was starving for cake the whole time, because, as you said, I'd like to live in that set. |
