"Little Dancer" now "Marie, Dancing Still" to play Seattle's 5th Avenue later this month

With Terrence Mann as Degas, Louise Pitre, Dee Hoty, Karen Ziemba, and Jenny Powers (Ziemba and Powers were in the cast at Kennedy Center).

I wonder how it has changed (the focus is apparently now more on Marie than on Degas).

I liked it a lot at Kennedy Center; reviews were, I believe, mixed.

Chime in, dramedy :)

i think Little Dancer is much better than Marie, Still Dancing. There is a TM for "little dancer" and i wonder if that is the reason for the change.

I did find this interesting article on Degas and whether he was "active" with them. "Laurens posits that it’s highly unlikely Degas sexually abused 14-year-old van Goethem, because Degas was a well-documented celibate, his abstinence rooted in a disgust of womankind. "

I don't think Degas pursues Marie in the musical and is more of bystander to her interest in the younger man.

Me too! But I think the current title is clunky. I like that song title referenced in another post - Dancing Still. More evocative than Still Dancing, imo.

There is a song in the show called "Dancing Still" - that could be a link to the evolution of the new title.

My biggest complaint is the little dancer doesn’t have any songs except a little quiet bedtime prayer. Totally missed opportunity with songs the younger suitor or even degas. I’m hoping that the focus on Marie means that she gets some good songs. I think the rest of it can be fixed/improved. Although I suspect that degas’s attention to young woman may have been inappropriate (I’ve never researched it so don’t know), the show doesn’t have the creepy issues that Gigi has with a society selling off young girls to rich suitors without marriage.

Keep in mind that Marie is being played by a world class ballerina, Tiler Peck who is, to be fair, not really a terrific singer. She is in the show to dance beautifully.

Megan Fairchild sang in On the Town and she is a ballet dancer.

Ivy Smith in On The Town has almost no solo singing to do - and what is there (the first refrain of "Do Re Do") isn't hard singing, nor need it be all that great - given that in the context of the song, she's learning how to sing, and she has a lousy voice teacher lol. The only other actual singing she has is in the finale in unison with the other 2 female leads (merely the lyric "Pitkin understood...he really understood") and assumedly she sings with the full company in the "New York New York" ending reprise (and with the women's chorus in the remainder of "Do Re Do"). Hardly a singing role.

Vera in On Your Toes gets less than that - no singing at all.

I liked it very much also, so much so that I hoped to see it a second time, but there were no tickets left for my available dates. I assumed I would just catch it again in New York, but then the reviews came out and floored me.

I hope this revised production makes it to the east coast. Glad to see they've kept Beowulf Boritt as designer. Louise Pitre is a fine talent, but Rebecca Luker as adult Marie in the DC production moved me to tears at the end.

I also thought Rebecca Luker was fantastic in DC. Her last song was as moving & dramatic as anything I've ever seen. Not sure what happened with the casting.
Louise Pitre is okay, but she isn't really a singer at all, truth be told. She's an actress who sings. The songs for Adult Marie were terrific, as I recall. Seems odd.

Louise Pitre is an incredible singer. I've seen her live twice in the last two years, and she stunned me both times. On what are you basing your opinion?

Is it possible that Rebecca Luker wasn’t available for this version? I’m fairly sure she was committed to this show.

When I saw a workshop, she was the highlight of the show ... the new older Marie's claim to fame seems to have been as star of Mamma Mia in Toronto.

Not only Toronto...Louise Pitre originated the role of Donna on Broadway and got a Tony nod for it. She was terrific, but has not, to my knowledge, been back to New York since.

About 10 years ago, Louise Pitre was in the Carnegie Hall concert version of the musical KRISTINA (aka Kristina Fran Duvemala), which came from the same ABBA songwriters as CHESS... and oh yes, MAMMA MIA.

She was quite good in the second female lead, and the show was recorded live. Unfortunately, the English lyrics are absolutely abysmal, so I much prefer the Swedish recording.
