Second Stage does this as well. That’s why there’s always a bunch of people hanging out in the cafe right at curtain. They make them wait there and then all get in a line to fill gaps from the front to the back.

For (some) sold out performances, 2nd Stage sells you a ticket that guarantees you will see the show. They have you hang out in the café, and right before the show begins, they try to seat you if there are available spots. If none are available, you stand in back of the last row. I did this procedure for Dear Evan Hansen back on 5/21/16. I ended up sitting in the first row -- a good deal for me; however, some of the others had to stand.
