| How is not having a pre-show announcement a "sign of respect" for the audience? Is having the announcement then a sign of disrespect?? If so, let's hope that producers continue to DISRESPECT the audience even harder! | |

| Yes, that was poorly phrased. I was trying to imply that it showed an appreciation of the fact that audiences attending Broadway shows today are (or SHOULD be, and yes, sometimes they're not or might simply forget) knowledgeable enough to turn off their phone or unwrap their candy before the start of the show. I didn't mean to imply that it's disrespectful to make that announcement. I found it interesting more than anything else. | |

But indeed, exactly who are these "audiences attending Broadway shows"?? Most likely only a percentage of those patrons are regular/knowledgeable theatregoers - others may not know the protocols at all. Or they don't think about it unless they're reminded. While I agree that the pre-show announcements are not necessarily for US (i.e. people who hang out on theatre chat boards lol), and I'd be happy not to have them, I think they do help for others, and/or, as you intimated, they may remind us to check our phones one last time, etc. I also appreciate when it's done in a creative or entertaining way. The opening scrim design at The Band's Visit, or the preshow cellphone bit in the Once On This Island revival. Or the pidgin Italian announcement at The Light In The Piazza. Much more trying and annoying to me, no matter how necessary it is deemed, are the pre-curtain stand-up routines that have become a de facto part of regional theatre (at least in Boston), which involve not only "turn off your cellphones" etc, but are also designed to sell the rest of the theatre's season and hawk other promotional stuff. Again, I get the "why" of it, but the "how" can really get tedious. I know it's not going to stop anytime soon, but oh, how I wish it would. |

OK, this is getting much more air time then I intended it to get. I guess I posted something about it because it was such an exception to the general rule. I do assume, though, that everyone who goes to see any show or movie anywhere is aware of the need to shut off their phones, not to say that everyone does (and yes, even the more sophisticated among us might well forget). It was just so unusual NOT to get the announcement which is what I thought made it "newsworthy", so to speak. And yes, I also appreciate it when it's done cleverly and in keeping with the particular theme of a show. |

And certainly not to make a huge deal about this either, lol, but I do think it's always a worthy discussion. I agree with you that NOT hearing the announcement would be something to note. But we really can't predict who knows the protocols and who doesn't. The most galling cellphone experience I've ever had was during an audition (I was the musical director). The woman was, I think, in the middle of her monologue, when a phone rang. It was HERS. She excused herself, pulled the phone out of her bag, and answered the call, right there, in front of us. Maybe an emergency situation she didn't forewarn us about? No - it sounded like maybe she was talking to one of her kids - politely saying that she was in the middle of an audition, and would call back later. Then, without any explanation, she started her monologue again. By this time, I was practically underneath the upright piano (if one could do such a thing), flabbergasted. So, you just never know. ;-) |

| That's actually a great audition technique --- she would certainly be remembered by everyone. | |

| I always loved this story: Actress was auditing when a phone rang at the audition room/table, without missing a beat she answered the phone, continuing to sing her aria into the phone--and the production had found its Carlotta. |

| I liked the way Cry-Baby used the overture for the announcements. | |
