| She looked fantastic, acted the part quite well, and worked well opposite a quite good John Schneider. The weakest part of the performance was the singing--i believe she was always dubbed in movies, no? I would have liked to have seen Leslie Caron, who did it in Paris or London or both? | |

| David Richards: "Swathed in velvet and fur, she is a handsome woman. Although "Grand Hotel" doesn't ask much dancing of her, the legendary legs are up to the challenge. As an actress, let's just say she has an elegant presence. And as a singer, well, let's not say anything at all. Her sudden romance with the dashing but penniless Baron Felix Von Gaigern (Greg Zerkle) doesn't work. But frankly, I'm not sure it has ever worked." Marlo Manners (Lady Barrington) |

| I agree with everything you say about Charisse, although I saw her when understudy John Scherer was on for Schneider. She didn't even seem to be trying to find pitch when she did the songs, but she looked beautiful and she was touching. Montevecchi got some laughs in the role, probably a good thing, while Charisse got none, and Montevecchi sang it better (not saying much, and I do love "Liliane" howling in "Grim Hotel"), but Charisse really made more sense. Montevecchi did not convey vulnerability or fragility in the role, and that's essential. Caron played it in Berlin. Charisse did a stock tour of Illya Darling in 1968, and I would guess that she tried to sing a bit more when she did that. |

| You are right, AlanScott. Ms. Charisse did try to sing a bit more when she did Illya Darling. Alas, with no greater success. But she looked FABulous. | |

| Thank you. Yes, she was always dubbed in her films, but I think she used to sing a bit in her nightclub act with her husband, Tony Martin. (Leslie Caron was dubbed in "Gigi," by the way, but she sounds just fine on the outtakes.) | |

| Charisse played the love interest in the '52 non-musical "western" The Wild North". Her character performs the song "Northern Lights" in a saloon sequence. MGM recorded Charisse's vocal, but then used Ruth Martin's rendition in the final print of the film. Charisse's vocal is included as a bonus track on the film's soundtrack recording. | |
