Question about Theatre Photographers (Martha Swope, Joan Marcus, Ellie Kurtz....)
Posted by: barna99 02:49 pm EDT 03/10/19

Dear theatrelovers,

Lately, I have been interested in the work of theatre photographers. I am not interested in how to be a good photographer, instead, I would like to find out more about the impact that theatre photographers have on the theatrical form. I understand that nowadays, video has more of an immediate impact, but I realized that when I think of "A Chorus Line" or "Sunday in the Park with George" the original cast photos are still very much on my mind. Most of those pictures are iconic. I have been trying to find information on their impact on future performances, on acting styles....on anything. I have only found a few interviews here and there but nothing of substance. I believe that the work of Martha Swope, for example, requires more study. If anyone has any information, I would love to find out more about the topic.
Thanks for your help,

Not an answer related directly to your question but this might be a good time to remind everyone that there is quite an extensive collection of Martha Swope photographs available online at the New York Public Library site for free viewing.
