Um, that change has been around for years. I think I first noticed it in a college or regional theater production of "Shrew" in the early 1980s, and I've noticed it occasionally since. And I certainly don't see a lot of productions of "Shrew" or "Kate."
Directors and actors can do a lot with sub-texting, to have Kate and Petruchio find and tame each other, but that tiny word change helps. And considering all that's been done with Shakespearean texts over the centuries, it really is tiny. |
