Is it surprising that people who appear in advertising are paid? And that they are expected to say things that sell the product?

Indeed - that is what commercials are. Perhaps we're just not as used to commercials for musicals that have testimonials in them. But yeah, whether it's a new car, or a floor wax (and a dessert topping), or Aladdin, it's all the same game.
