What a juicy post - thank you. I know it's not news, but I love how smart the Sondheim scores are. He really uses musical motifs with such amazing precision. I was struck, in my recent "Finishing the Hat" revisit, how he repeatedly speaks about structure and form and function. He writes shows that are lush and emotional, and it's so good to reminded that there is mathematical technique building these things.

It reminds me of going to see an Edward Hopper exhibit a few years back. There was an entire room showing all of the preparatory sketches and paintings for "Nitehawks" - showing the painstaking work that went into making sure the colors and angles were correct for light spilling out of the building and into the building. After seeing all of that, I walked up to the painting itself and almost started crying. It's not an especially emotional painting, but the angles and colors vibrated through me. I love that a layman can be moved to tears by the mathematical "work" of art.
