|Prospect Theater Company will present a workshop production
of Timothy Huang's award-winning original musical
from May 8 - 19, 2019
Prospect Theater Company (Melissa Huber, Managing Director / Cara Reichel, Producing Artistic Director) is pleased to present a workshop staging of American Morning, with book, music and lyrics by Timothy Huang, from May 8th through May 19th, 2019. The production will be staged in the Mezzanine Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres.
The creative team is led by director and choreographer Marlo Hunter, who previously helmed Carner & Gregor's Unlock'd for Prospect, for which she received an SDC Callaway Award. Julianne B. Merrill is the music director. The design team and cast will be announced shortly.
American Morning is an original musical that examines the modern-day immigrant experience from the point of view of two Chinese immigrant cab drivers in New York City: Chin and Eng share a taxi medallion, a homeland, and the American Dream. While Eng slowly climbs the ladder of success by day, Chin falls short by night, and their partnership spirals towards a single, desperate act. When so much ties the two together, what drives them apart?
American Morning (previously titled Costs of Living) was the recipient of a 2016 Richard Rodgers Award, a 2015 B-Side Theatricals New American Musical Award, and an official selection of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Festival of New Works in 2015. It was developed at the Village Theatre's Festival of New Musicals in 2016, and was a selection of the ASCAP Musical Theater workshop in 2011, as well as the Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop's 2012 Master Class, moderated by Stephen Sondheim.
American Morning was inspired by a 2009 New York Times article written by Corey Kilgannon and was later featured in the NYT City Room Blog.

"A powerful story, complex characters and a biting critique of the American immigrant experience today, all wrapped up in a suspenseful murder mystery."
~ David Henry Hwang
"American Morning seeks to challenge the status quo, lend voice to underrepresented people, and change the conversation... The result is a work that defines itself not by its music but by its mandate to challenge an audience's way of thinking." ~ Michael Korie
