|and that didn't turn out too well. It's a tricky part, and sometimes hype doesn't meet reality. Part of Robert Preston's brilliance in the role was his total surprise to the audience of his mastery of having those musical skills. He had been known mostly as a character actor in film, mostly playing heavies in westerns, although he had done runs on Broadway before. But nothing in the musical realm, and his rhythm and showbiz savvy, energy, pizzaz and wonderful acting came I'm sure as a delightful surprise to everyone when he premiered his Harold Hill. On paper Dick Van Dyke sounded great, but his energy was off and if I recall, it was almost as though he was listless and not quite there, perhaps because of what was happening in her personal life at the time. Harold Hill is one of those parts where talented folks have either been accused of copying Preston or just not living up to their memories of Preston. I love the show, but fear the prices are going to humongous with the press already hyping a show 1 1/2 years away.|
