I think we don't know and can't know how talented Frank is. We have too little evidence. We know that somewhere along the way, he's given up doing what he wanted to do. If we had the sense that he was really happy producing movies instead, we might say fine. But he doesn't seem to be happy. Which I think is more of what the show is about. Maybe the show is not as successful as it might be in making it clear that it's about losing your way, losing who you want to be and what you want to do, whether you're good at it or not, but I think that's the intention (and it's not to suggest that producing commercial movies is a shameful thing to do).
