"In a production done a few years ago at Hartford Stage, various women opened their windows to Petruchio as he sang the song and that added texture to the number."
Forgive me, lowwriter, but . . . . AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
If a performer can't make that number work by himself onstage, the problem is not that the song needs something to give it texture. I'm not saying it's an easy song to do well. It's not. But when someone can do it — as Alfred Drake certainly showed he could in the Hallmark TV production — all you would do is screw him and the audience by doing something like that. And if the performer can't do it . . . well, I don't think that various women opening their windows is going to help much.
