The Donaldsons, unlike the Variety poll, had a very large pool of voters. Around 2,700 people voted that season. And all a winner needed was one more vote than the person who came in second place. With at least five contenders in each category, there would have been no need for anyone to vote for Ritchard in both categories for him to win both. Let's imagine this:

Leading:
Ritchard — 823
Slezak — 819
John Raitt — 550
Don Ameche —304
Ezio Pinza — 290

Supporting:
Ritchard — 814
Stanley Prager — 546
Eric Berry — 539
Eddie Foy — 412
Lew Parker — 334

See what I mean? Those are just guesses, of course, but they are based on what Billboard reported in terms of the placements of people and the general reporting about how close vote-getters were to each other.
