Just curious: is the racial angle dealt with at all in its book? I found myself wondering while listening to the score if the two leads could be played by people of the same race. Does his having been raised in Maine dictate that David must be white? Does having been raised north of Central Park demand that Barbara be black (or of color)? It seems as though the secondary characters could provide racial diversity to the cast if the two leads were of the same race, and that the show would probably not be changed much if David were black and
Barbara white. I enjoy the score; I have no idea how well the book played back in 1962 or how well it would play today. I just wonder if the lead couple's respective races mattered much in the end.
