When I first saw the movie, I thought that perhaps Rossellini and his screenwriters had adapted some classic story or legend and updated it to Rome during the occupation, and that Jones and Schmidt had utilized the same classic story or legend. I guess I didn't realize back then that the movie was based on a novel. This must have been in pre-Internet days or I would have looked on imdb and seen that the movie was based on a novel. I think that I must not have noticed it in the opening credits. But over the years I have found nothing to suggest that there was some classic story or legend behind it all. Which doesn't mean there wasn't, but I didn't find anything when I've checked. Anyway, let me know if you learn anything more. And perhaps now that I've got more resources than I had last time I checked, I should look into it a bit further myself.
