I first encountered the show in a Staten Island community theater production many years ago, I think late 1970s or early '80s. And then I saw a wonderful Off-Off-Broadway production in 1999, which had the added thrill of Dick Latessa in the audience at the performance I attended. (See link.) I don't think it's a perfect show but it's a very beautiful one, deepy moving and heartbreaking yet cathartic at the end. And some of Jones and Schmidt's songs are among their best even though every obscure, including the opening/closing numbers "Within This Empty Space" the gorgeous ballad "The Greatest of These," and the title song.
