|I read reviews of Philemon in '75 and wanted to get the cast album, but was never able to find it in any of the Chicago area stores. Bill Rudman says in the booklet that the LP was not mass distributed and could only be found in specialty stores like Doubleday, Colony, and Drama Book or by mail order from Painted Smiles.
Here's a little more detail about the recording per comments of Rudman and Jones. The first 14 tracks are the complete off-Broadway cast album presentation, mastered from the best existing source, i.e., a pristine, factory-sealed LP. Track 15 is a demo recording sung by Schmidt of "I Believe in Music", "a bouncy, poetic anthem" for Cockian/Philemon that was cut from the show. Tracks 16 "The Clown Scene" and 17 "Sometimes/There Must Be More Than This" are musical numbers from the show that were not included on the LP. They have been mastered from the TV production's soundtrack. Both are gems that greatly enhanced my appreciation of the score and story.
Regarding the sound quality (and speaking as a layman), I was quite satisfied by the clarity and crisp nature of the 14 tracks from the cast album. The sound of the 2 numbers from the TV soundtrack is somewhat murky, but given the value and importance of their inclusion, I'm happy that they have been made part of the package.
