I think theatre capacity also plays a significant part in the transfer equation.
In the UK Angels in America played the 900-ish seat Lyttelton at the National, then transferred to the 1500+ seat Neil Simon in NY. If they had been able to open at a smaller (1000 seat) house in NY, would the Angels revival have been a hotter ticket than it was..?
Theatergoers paying for 2 parts of event productions such as an Angels in America revival or Harry Potter is, in my opinion, more likely than committing to a double bill of a newer play like The Inheritance (or... something like what The Norman Conquests did with 3 plays in rep, a trilogy but they can be enjoyed singularly as well).
In the UK, The Inheritance played at the 420 seat Young Vic. in NYC it is transferring to the 1050 seat Barrymore. It will be interesting to see how it sells... |
