I am not a trained musicologist, but I have heard the OBC and the soundtrack of West Side Story many times.
I find the music of the stage show to be 'rough' and 'gritty,' while the same music in the film can sound 'stylized,' and well, 'Hollywoodized.' I dunno--maybe it's due in part that a stage show is recorded using quite different technology than a film. |
