It's in the script because the rental script you get is the original production script. All the stage directions refer to the original 1964 production.
As I mentioned before, yes, there are several references to the staircase in the dialogue, but they don't seem like "big deal" references to me. I'm not usually in favor of rewriting dialogue (though we all know it happens), but I tend to think that if there was a solid reason why the staircase couldn't be in the set, you could probably get permission to change those few lines. (To refer to the original post about this subject - something like the onstage line in A Chorus Line is different, certainly in its omnipresence. The Dolly staircase exists in one scene only, and really for one big moment only. It has no designated function in the rest of the show.)
Of course the theatricality of the staircase entrance can't be denied. But there's also a huge suspension of disbelief in that no one else using that staircase (the entrance to the restaurant in a very practical way) even gets noticed lol. So it's only a "grand theatrical entrance" when Dolly Levi uses it. ;-) |
