I don't know if she ever got to go on, but Debra Messing was an understudy in "Four Dogs and a Bone" at the Theater de Lys (I don't think the name had been changed to the Lucille Lortel yet) back in the early 90s, probably right before she headed west for "Ned and Stacy."
