|Years ago there was a lot of chatter on another message board (most likely FSM) about the viability of releasing the TV soundtrack of Philemon on CD. Supposedly Harvey Schmidt was either involved with or had given his blessing to another record label that was interested in such a project. I tried doing a search on the FSM board but did not come up with any results.
Anyway, my recollection (which may be faulty) is that Schmidt was unhappy with the sound quality of the master tapes/original musical elements of the off-Broadway cast recording -- there was the mention of a watery problem. However, Schmidt was open to a soundtrack release because the original musical elements of that version were thought to be in better shape. I believe a lot of time and energy was invested in this pursuit and occasionally there were updates, but obviously a soundtrack release did not happen. It's possible that economics was a factor. Continued work may well have required considerable funding and the likelihood of minimal sales may have made the whole endeavor not worth it.
BTW, there is no mention of any of this in the Harbinger booklet. That's why I did not bring it up in my original post. 20 years ago when I was a wide-eyed newbie on ATC, I asked some questions about the unsuccessful attempts to make an OBC album of James Joyce' The Dead and I got beat up by a veteran poster. A few months ago I made some positive comments about the Sepia Record's CD of Donnybrook! and the same poster challenged my comments. Something tells me that my airing of the rather long and checkered history of the Philemon saga may have the unintended effect of opening old wounds. That certainly is not my intention.
