There's a similar anecdote about stage directions. I only remember it vaguely. Ugh, growing old.

There was a show for which the director crossed out all the stage directions. Later, the director met the playwright and asked why it was that a certain character just stopped talking near the end of the last scene. The playwright said it was because there was a stage direction: So-and-so takes out a gun and shoots whosit dead.
