The play opened in fall of 63, which I still consider a part of the "late fifties" in terms of social mores. What has always amazed me is that Corie, obviously a very bright woman who has probably just graduated college,
is expected to sit home during the day and simply wait for her lawyer husband to come home. No discussion at all about whether she should get a job--how to spend that time etc. Simon simply assumes that, no matter
how smart she is, she has no interest in doing anything but waiting for her husband to come home. |
