I've been watching some old Groucho Marx "You Bet Your Life" game shows on Amazon Prime. Usually when there is a lady, and after asking if she is married, Groucho first asks what her husband does for a living. It is almost assumed that she isn't working back then, and these were on from the 50s into the 60s.
In a bit of a Neil Simon's defense, I don't think he has assigned Victor Velasco, the other character in "Barefoot" very much of a real profession, nor Corie's mother either. I suppose someone could cast it to have the Telephone Man become a Telephone Woman to show that women did work back then (though maybe not in that capacity in reality for the phone company), unless Elaine Joyce would object for some reason. |
