Sometime between May 2017 and May 2018 the change was made--for, at least, the Met production. It premiered first at the ENO in October 2018.
Sher has not done a new production at the Met since ROMEO ET JULIETTE in 2016.
I can think of only two explanations for the change. One--less likely--is that the Met finally realized Sher is NOT a good opera director. The other is that HE decided to bow out(too busy?)and, only then, Robinson was hired to direct it at the ENO. I don't know if Sher was ever signed to direct it in London. I agree that it would be strange for him to have come in for a pre-existing production. |
