| I don't know what productions of SHOW BOAT you're thinking of. But I can't see this as comparable to the situation with PORGY. No question Edna Ferber's source novel should be credited. But none of these people--Ferber, Hammerstein or Kern--has their name(s)now in the title. Yes, people may refer to Kern's(or Kern and Hammerstein's)SHOW BOAT just as they'll talk about Puccini's LA BOHEME but these composers--and/or their lyricists or librettists--didn't sign contracts stipulating that their names be in the title. |
