The NY Times had an article about it. See below.

I saw the revival years ago, and while it was daring for its time, with one or two exceptions, it was pretty lame as a show. There were a couple of funny sketches. One of my teachers was a replacement in the original cast, and he told me he did the show because he wanted to do the Sam Shepard sketch because he liked the provocative writing. Since he was smiling during his recollections, I think he also liked to take his clothes off as well. :)

Some well-known people who did the show seem to have mostly come from the original production and not the revival, unless I am mistaken. Bill Macy ("Maude"), Alan Rachins ("L.A. Law", "Dharma and Greg"), Steven Keats ("Hester Street), and Eddie Phillips, Jr. ("Damn Yankees", other musicals), are the most well-known alumni I've heard of, as well as Margo Sappington who also did the choreography. The nude pas de deux is actually very nice, except I don't care for the music it was danced to.

There's a video of the show on YouTube which was originally shown on close-circuit via movie theatres that features a number of the original cast, if you want to judge for yourself. And yes, there's nudity.

It ran for years. "Naked Boys Singing", "Let My People Come" and the latest "Camp Morning Wood" seem to be newer variations on this theme. Of course, in terms of being provocative and cost-effective, two of the things one can do pretty inexpensively and get a lot of word of mouth is have someone (or the cast) cross-dress or go nude. But my teacher who was in the original production of "Calcutta" did say that the original show was actually a pretty sumptuous and expensive physical production in terms of sets and costumes (what there were) anyway. He had some interesting and sometimes raunchy stories about doing the show, including the audition, which lines up with what was said in the NY Times article.

Feel free to add your observations or recollections of this famous/infamous show.
